Outdated Home Design Trends to Avoid
Custom Home Design, Home Renovation | September 3, 2020
If you are thinking about renovating your current home or about building a custom home, it is important to ensure that your new space will not only function well but will also look good for years to come. At Ridgepoint Homes, we have worked on countless home renovation and custom-building projects and we have seen it all when it comes to home design trends. That is why we have put together a list of some of our favourite outdated home design trends to avoid.
1. Wall-to-Wall Carpet
At one point in time, wall-to-wall carpet was thought of as a luxurious flooring option; however, today’s home design is centred around the high-end look and appeal of hardwood flooring. While having carpeting throughout your home can make the space feel outdated, carpet can still be a great option for absorbing sound and adding comfort underfoot in the bedroom. Consider using carpet sparingly in your home and opting for more high-end options like hardwood.
2. Oak Kitchen Cabinets
Oak cabinets or, more specifically, honey oak cabinets were a popular choice for kitchens in the 80s and 90s. If your home has oak kitchen cabinets consider updating them by refinishing them with a darker stain or by painting them white or grey for a more modern look.
3. Shiny Brass Fixtures
While shiny brass fixtures and hardware used to be an incredibly popular home design trend, modern homes tend to opt for a more muted tone of brass. Newer versions of brass fixtures also feature sleeker rounded or geometric shapes compared to the chunky fixtures that were so popular in the early 90s.
4. Wood Panelling
One of the biggest outdated home design trends that homeowners should avoid is dark wood panelling. While wood feature walls are a current trend, newer wood walls often run horizontally instead of vertically and are whitewashed or painted out to create a fresher appeal.
5. Tile Countertops
Tile countertops can be incredibly unappealing as well as extremely difficult to keep clean. Rather than using tile on the countertops, consider opting for a surface that is easier to clean like quartz or granite for the counter and saving the tile for the backsplash.
